Perspective

The image is this post is the view I had each morning for 4 days in September. The mountain is Mt. Katadin in Baxter State park, Maine. The feature to the right is the great basin. The geology was shaped by glacier action. By the way, Mt. Katadin is the northern most point of the Appalacian Trail. The deer in the previous post were in the left corner of the lake which is Sandy Stream Pond. This image was taken with the EOS 7D,  24-105mm lens at 24mm, ISO 200, f/8, 1/250th sec shutter speed in manual mode.

Welcome New Subscribers – White Tailed Deer

I extend a hearty welcome to the recent subscribers to the blog. I invite you all (plus the people frequently visiting the web site) to feel free to ask questions or post a comment. If you want to know more about an image or a photographic situation, please ask.

The following two images were captured in Baxter State Park, Maine at Sandy Stream Pond. These were both long distant images across the lake. I was using the Canon 1D Mark 4 in manual mode, 500mm f/4 lens, ISO 400, aperture f/5, with a shutter speed of 1/160. Both images were cropped. I used Nik Color Efex Pro 4 for post processing. The deer suddenly appeared in the water so I started shooting with the settings I had previously set. As it turns out, the shutter speed wasn’t fast enough to freeze the action when the deer started playing. All of the fast action shots ended up being blurred. The hard lesson learned is to make sure you have your settings set for what you expect to see. I was caught flat footed. Enjoy the images – here are two of the keepers:

Fall Sunset

So after the float plane flew past (see previous post) I thought I was done with photography for the day. In fact, I declared myself done. I had plenty of reason to convince myself it was time to call it a day. It was getting darker, we had a ways to drive back to town, I was hungry, I was tired, I had to eat, I had to rest for the next day……… As I hung around waiting for the group to catch up to my way of thinking, I looked up and noticed the richness of the sky that was developing around me. Suddenly, I forgot about all that was ahead of me and sank into the moment. I used my Canon EOS-7D, with a 24-105mm lens at 50mm, ISO 200, Aperture was at f/16, and shutter speed 1/10 of a second.

Enjoy………   Jim

At day’s end…..

I was recently in Maine on a photo safari for moose. The photo safari was in Baxter State Park near Millinockett, Maine. Baxter State park is 200,000 acre wilderness area. By that i mean that it is kept as a primitive area. The roads are narrow, improved logging roads. They only go far enough to get you to a wilderness trail. The bottom line to my moose photo safari is that I was mooseless in Millinockett! On one of the days, we dropped out of the park to the shoreline of a lake just south of the park boundries. The workshop/safari leader, Chris Dodds, knew exactly where to take us to get the best possible images of a killer sunset. On that lake, there is a pontoon plane operation that flies people to remote lakes. So as we were there taking pictures of the sunset, the float plane flew directly in front of us as it returned to base at the end of a long day.

At days end...

Halloween Mood

With Halloween a couple of weeks away, I thought I would send out something to go along with the decorations that are going up throughout the neighborhood. This image was painted on a rock cliff/wall at Skagway, Alaska. The skull is a tribute of sorts to the pirate legacy that stretched all the way up to Alaska. It certainly caused me to pause to think about the history of the area, the determination of the people, and the hardships they had to endure.

Cocoa Village Arts and Crafts Festival

I will have my event tent out this weekend (Oct 15th & 16th) at the Cocoa Village (Cocoa, Florida) Fall Arts and Crafts Festival. The weather looks good for both days so come on out and say hello. I have a new line of photo note/greeting cards that will be making their debut. I also have the water lilies that you have seen posted. I have the water lilies in the greeting cards, the 16X20 matted photo, and 16X20 photo printed on fine art canvas. Show times are from 10am until 5pm each day. I look forward to seeing you there.
